Yateley Silverbacks Basketball Club Former 'Backs squad
Here we list former players who have moved on to pastures new. We wish them all well and invite them back with open arms as supporters or attendees at social events.
Sam comes from Sri Lanka but now lives and works in Yateley. She is a former member of the Sri Lankan National basketball set up and also the Sri Lanka Navy basketball team. She has excellent ball handling skills and is a huge threat from the outside with her three point accuracy. When she is happy her smile lights up the sports hall!
James made his basketball comeback for the 'Backs after spending a few years travelling the world and climbing mountains. He was Edgbarrow captain when they won the 1991 County Cup and played a season for Lodden Valley in the early noughties. A tenacious defender but there were expletives when Jimmy missed a shot or turned the ball over! In his one season for the Silverbacks Jimmy will be best remembered for his numerous 3 point bank shots and wearing knee high socks and headband despite continuos ridicule. Off the court Jimmy is a huge Liverpool FC fan, devoted godfather to Matthew Daines and a charity marathon runner. After one season Jimmy decided to leave the team as he would rather sit on his sofa than on the bench!
One of the youngest Silverbacks, 'Charlesy' was the first former pupil taught by the chairman to come back and play in his team. Tom was 'Basketball Player of the Year' at Yateley Manor in 2005. Another keen rugby player, we expected Tom to be aggressive under the basket and also ensure he brought the girls from Farnborough College to watch our matches. He was aggressive but never brought any girls! Tom will always be remembered as the politest of 'Backs. He left as as after securing some superb A level results so is off to Uni.
Another Yateley Manor old boy, Sports scientist Anthony is probably one of the clubs fittest players despite being the archetypal Man Utd armchair fan. During 2010/11 Ant had his own take on the clubs philosophy 'if youre open shoot the ball' and changed it to 'if ive got the ball, im shooting it' ! He managed to overtake Tristan on the last day of the season to avoid being the lowest points per game scorer. An all rounder on the court he is also used to sitting a lot, whether it be on a bike or a bench!
Yet another Edgbarrow product. Paul played for the Aztecs and Lodden Valley throughtout the 90's, but hadn't played for a while - spending the last few years kicking lumps out of strikers on the footie pitch or changing nappies at home before returning to the league in 2010. A powerhouse under the basket, 'Crawfie' has a reputation for advising referees and for constant commentary. This resulted in him leading the 'Backs in technical fouls in 2010/11 and winding up the most opposition players!
5' 8" Guard
Adding some international flavour to the 'Backs, French Steeve (yes, that is how it's spelt) joined in summer 2012 after recently moving to the area and previously played in the Solent League for Southampton. An attacking, driving guard, 'bodybuilder' Steeve impressed on his debut at the Aztecs tournament.
6' 2" Guard/Forward
Local lad Callum is yet another recruit who came through the Reading Rockets youth set up. He also played in the League for the Aztecs but has signed up because 'you seem to have more of a laugh at Yateley' (what does he mean?). Callum has a terrific shot out to three-point range and passes well too. He needs to be more confident in his abilities and maybe extended minutes on court will help supply this.
A newcomer to competitive basketball, 'Big Ron' is the keenest sportsman ever to walk the earth. He used to be a pro football player in his native South Africa and is struggled to cope with the minimum contact aspect of basketball! A massive Manchester United fan, Ron struggled with his jumping after a freak high jump incident left him permanently earth bound - not very useful for basketball! After just one season and two appeearances Ron left to concentrate on his football coaching.
Rich joined us midway through the 2010/11 season for a brief spell. A leaper, he made a good contribution at both ends in his six appearances although at times he needed to wipe the butter off his hands! Rich led the club in free throw percentage, his 2/2 unbeatable! He left after one seaon seeking pastures new.
Martyn Jackson 6’0’’ Guard/Forward
MJ will wear #23 this season and we hope he plays like His Airness too! He is a smooth shooting scorer who also drives to the hoop well. He will be a Wessex league rookie. Another PE teacher in our ranks (that’s 5 PE teachers in the squad plus 2 ‘little people’ teachers!) he also has a sneaker fetish and owns over 50 pairs of basketball boots. A good looking, rock climbing, chap who catches the ladies eyes – MJ lives and works in Alton.
Local Yateley boy Gareth is our best shooter and team 'pretty boy.' He holds numerous 'Backs offensive records after our first season including hitting 5 threes in a game twice and he is also a great defender. He had previously played in the League for 3 years with the Aztecs. Off the court 'sensitive' Gareth, when not looking in the mirror, has a busy life as a 'home husband' cleaning his show home and looking after his new son Oliver. He is an injury prone fitness fanatic and with wife Lee travels the country 'treasure hunting'!
